Club Director/Head Coach Hangsel Sanguino

Founder, Director, and Head Coach, Hangsel has been playing volleyball for over 10 years. He continues to play in coed leagues and is excited to share his knowledge with the Spartans Volleyball Club. During his high school days, Hangsel received training from former national team players, including Adrian Wouts and Allan Coulter, leading his team to finish first in Division 2.

Volleyball holds a special place in Hangsel's heart, serving as a platform for personal growth, teamwork, and camaraderie. The game represents a blend of strategy, skill, athleticism, and sportsmanship that he deeply values and aims to instill in our players. His main goal is to encourage all team members to learn great techniques and form good habits to lay a solid foundation for future development. Through coaching, Hangsel aims to share not just his technical knowledge of the sport but also the values of discipline, teamwork, and resilience that volleyball has taught him.

 

! In addition to his passion for volleyball, Hangsel has a MSc degree in School and Applied Child Psychology from the University of Calgary and is currently pursuing a PhD at the same institution

Head Coach

Alejandro Peña

Alejandro has been playing volleyball since 2007 and brings a wealth of experience and enthusiasm to the Spartans Volleyball Club. Throughout high school, he was a versatile athlete, excelling in volleyball, basketball, and track.

 

His passion for sports and dedication to hard work are evident in his athletic achievements. Alejandro is excited to coach and teach, aiming to help each team member develop their skills and foster a love for the game. He looks forward to contributing to the Spartans' success in his first season as an assistant coach

Head Coach

Justine Bui

Justine discovered her love for volleyball in 2009 during her school years. From that moment on, she dedicated countless hours to developing her skills through volleyball camps and competitive play. She competed annually in Chestermere and the Rocky View School Division from Grade 5 onward, consistently contributing to a strong, division-winning team. After high school, Justine continued playing in adult leagues, maintaining her connection to the sport and further refining her skills.

 

With over a decade of involvement in volleyball, Justine brings both experience and enthusiasm to her coaching. She previously coached the Westmount Senior High School Girls' volleyball team for three years, fostering both individual and team growth.

 

Justine thrives on building team chemistry and emphasizes the importance of mental maturity, communication, and a positive attitude. She is excited to be part of the Spartans Volleyball Club and looks forward to helping her athletes grow and succeed this season!

Head Coach

Dan Mueller 

Dan has been involved in athletics his entire life, competing in multiple sports throughout his high school years. His passion for sport and leadership started early, as he began coaching while still in high school. A few years after graduating, Dan stepped away from coaching, eventually returning when his two boys began participating in organized sports. Volleyball is the sport Dan is most passionate about, and continues to play once or twice a week. Over the years, he has been actively involved as a coach in all of his children’s sporting activities, focusing on skill development, teamwork, and creating positive athletic experiences for young athletes.

 

A few years ago, Dan stepped back into volleyball coaching scene at the high school level, reconnecting with the game in a formal coaching role. This year, he further expanded his involvement by adding club volleyball coaching. Dan is committed to continuously developing as a coach and staying current with the evolving strategies and techniques of modern volleyball.

Head Coach

Abbey Bratt 

Abbey has been playing sports all her life and developed as a multi-sport athlete. She has built a strong foundation in athletic movement, competitiveness, and long-term development. Her volleyball training was guided by high-level, performance-driven coaches who emphasized technical mastery, game intelligence, and accountability at an elite level. These experiences shaped her coaching approach today, where she focuses on developing disciplined, adaptable athletes, with strong fundamentals and a high volleyball IQ.

Assistant Coach

Chris Mueller

Chris has been playing volleyball for the last 6 years. He began in 6th grade and continued to play through to the end of grade 12, winning multiple banners for his school. Outside of school, Chris played competitively for Hangsel for a few years, switched teams, and then came back to complete his final U18 season - which he believes was the best decision he made in his entire volleyball career. The season was filled with laughs, fun, and drive to improve his skills as an athlete.

In this next chapter as an assistant coach, Chris is excited to pass on his knowledge of the sport to an amazing group of athletes. He hopes to provide the same amazing and transformative experience to the next generation of players.

Assistant Coach

Andrea Garcia 

Andrea is in her second year with Spartans Volleyball Club and is the assistant coach for the U16 Red boys team. She believes teams are strongest when athletes work together while continuing to develop their individual skills. Having played competitive team sports throughout her youth, Andrea understands what it feels like to be in the athletes’ shoes and brings that perspective into her coaching. As a teacher, she works closely with kids in her professional life, which shapes her calm, supportive approach and helps create a space where athletes feel safe, confident, and encouraged to grow both on and off the court.

Assistant Coach

Aymane Bennazzi

Aymane started playing volleyball in high school and continued at Keyano College, where he was part of the program in the ACAC as a libero. After college, he coached high school volleyball in Fort McMurray and stayed involved in the game through recreational play. A few years ago, he wanted to return to coaching and joined the Spartans.

 

Aymane enjoys the thinking side of volleyball. He spends a lot of time on systems, decision-making, and how small adjustments change the game. He is a jack-of-all-trades player, with strengths in defense, serving, and strategy.

 

As a coach, Aymane focuses on helping athletes understand the game and trust their skills. He is especially interested in how mindset affects performance. His goal is to help players be confident, prepared, and steady on the court—both technically and mentally.

Assistant Coach

Jacob Godek

Jacob has been playing competitive volleyball for 4 years. After starting on the grade 9 junior high team, he switched to club where he would further develop his skills and eventually win medals in both AVA and Nationals. 

 

As an assistant coach, his goal is to pass on his knowledge to help prepare athletes for their future in the sport while also creating a positive environment for the team.

Assistant Coach

Haylee Bailey 

Haylee has been involved in the volleyball world for over a decade. She started playing volleyball in 2013 during her middle school years and went on to play for Ace Volleyball from 2016 to 2020, competing in Division 1 from U15 to U18. Haylee also played for a year at SAIT during the COVID-19 pandemic, which marked the beginning of her coaching career in 2021.

 

With three years of coaching experience, Haylee loves being back in the game, sharing her passion, and contributing to the development of young athletes. She is thrilled to be a part of the Spartans Volleyball Club and looks forward to an exciting season ahead!

Assistant Coach

Kendra Wallace 

Kendra has been playing volleyball since 2011 and competed at the club level from 2013 to 2016, earning Division 2 goal medals in both her U17 and U18 seasons. Throughout her playing career, she devloped a strong understanding of the gamr, honed her skills as a competitior, and built a deep appreciation for teamwork and dedication.

Now Stepping into her role as an assistant coach, Kendra is eager to share her knowledge and passion for the sport. She is committed to helping players refine their skills, strengthen their teamwork, and develop a love for the game that extends beyond the court. With her competitive spirit and enthusiasm, she looks forward to contributing to the team's growth and success.

Assistant Coach

Damian Stepniak 

Damian has been playing high level volleyball for the last 4 years. Starting in grade 9, he played through until grade 12, winning division 2 and 3 city championships back to back years with his high school team. He started playing club at U16 for Hangsel and continued to play 3 years with Hangsel as his coach. 

 

As an assistant coach, Damian is passionate about helping athletes develop strong fundamentals, confidence, and love for the game of volleyball while supporting the team’s growth both on and off the court.

Assistant Coach

Donovan Rayta 

Coach Donovan! is a new assistant coach for Spartans Volleyball Club. He played volleyball all the way up through Junior High and Senior High School as a left side attacker, in addition to the captain of both his school and club teams. He is incredibly passionate about the sport of volleyball and is excited to pass on his knowledge of the game and help refine the player's skills. He hope to learn as much from the Spartans as they learn from him!

Assistant Coach

Taleah Ross

Taleah began her club volleyball career at a U16 level, where she spent time training alongside Canada's Women's National Team, and quickly established herself as a Division 1 athlete. She competed as a middle blocker through to U18, earning a Provincial Silver Medal in her U17 year. Before retiring due to injury, Taleah competed at the Division 1 level in the USA as a right side.

Taleah brings several years of coaching experience, working with athletes ranging from beginning to high-performance. She is passionate about pushing players beyond their comfort zones and helping them unlock new levels of gameplay, while creating a fun and empowering environment.
